Using Data in Schools

This course will provide New York State educators with powerful data-driven decision making tools for school improvement. Participants will study the standards for school accountability under No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and their school's New York State Report Card. These documents will provide the basis for development and implementation of effective school improvement teams and plans. Participants will learn how to support teachers' use of testing data to improve instruction. Through the study of the use of data at both the administrative and classroom levels. participants will gain skills to improve student performance in their school.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the requirements of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Legislation
  • Use their school's Report Card to analyze performance
  • Define key accountability terms
  • Implement an effective School Improvement Team
  • Apply "SMART" guidelines to the development of goals
  • Develop strategies to improve graduation rates
  • Recognize subgroups, federal status and New York state status
  • Use item analysis to improve classroom assessments
  • Support the development of and implement appropriate evaluations to monitor progress
